April in Denver is Wonderful

I love the month of April. There’s nothing better than a wild number of fun thing to do, unpredictable weather and the start of playoff season for the Denver Nuggets (basketball) and Colorado Avalanche (hockey). And, even though the Colorado Rockies have had a number of painful seasons for several years, there’s nothing like experiencing Opening Day at Coors Field (make sure to wear warm clothing). Then there’s all of the wonderful theater, live music and fun pop up events making their way through town. There are so many things to do in Denver, Colorado that if you’re planning a trip or staycation-it’s a wonderful time of year to do it.

Book That Plane Ticket

The state of Colorado is an incredibly popular vacation destination. Once you decide to visit, book your plane tickets STAT. Spring and Summer travel to and through Denver International Airport stays booked and busy. Denver International Airport also happens to be the third busiest airport in the world. Yes, in the entire world.

Don’t Forget to Book a Tour (Or, Two)

If you’re looking to explore Denver and the state of Colorado and aren’t sure where to start, I strongly encourage you to book a tour. There are several reasons why tours are such a great way to experience Denver. First, you can leave the planning details to someone else. It can be so hard trying to figure out where to go and what to do in a place that’s unfamiliar to you.

The 16th Street Mall in downtown Denver is undergoing a huge construction project that makes experiencing downtown Denver a little confusing if you’re not from Denver. And, even many suburban Denverites struggle to figure out how to enjoy downtown Denver as it finishes up this project (end of 2024).

Traffic here sucks.

I said it. Leave the driving to someone else who’s being paid to deal with it. It’s your vacation. Eliminate (as much as possible) dealing with our crazy, aggressive traffic from how you explore the city. I’ve picked a wide range of experiences to check out below.

If you’re visiting town, live here and would like to experience it differently-book a tour and meet people who are new to you. And a tour is a great way for solo travelers to have fun, make connections and explore the state.

Where to Stay

The hotels and hostels below are primarily located in the Downtown Denver city center. These hotels are also easily accessed by public transit, ride shares or you can rent a car to get around.

What to Bring (the Weather is Unpredictable)

Book that End of Season Ski Day

If you love skiing or are interested in learning how to ski-book that day or days on the slopes. Almost all of the ski resorts will begin shutting down operations at the beginning of April through mid-April. What is so cool about enjoying snow sports at this time of year is that the weather is fantastic and all of the end of season events. I feel like this isn’t talked about enough. Most ski resorts have bands and other fun events to celebrate the end of the season.

Random Things to Do in Denver, Colorado in April

Theater and Comedy Performances to Check Out

There is a ridiculous number of theatrical performances, comedians coming into town and more. If you’re not interested in sports and are wondering what is there to do in Denver, there are so many arts focused events to enjoy.

Theater Performances

One of my absolute favorite things to do in Denver is to enjoy all of the amazing theater we have in town. In fact, there’s a ridiculous number of well-known actors who started their careers in local Colorado theater performances. This April has several performances that I’ve bookmarked and am so excited to see.

Comedy and Speakers

It feels like there is a constantly revolving door of speakers and comedians coming into town. I do want to mention that even the Colorado Speaker Series is sold out that sometimes people can’t attend and there are a limited number of tickets that *may* be available.

  • Trey Kennedy-He is so hilarious and I’m excited to see that he’s in town for two nights at the Paramount Theater. April 3 and April 4, 2024.
  • An Evening with John Cusack-I feel like every fan of the movie Say Anything and John’s other works will definitely be buying up those tickets. April 12, 2024
  • Sully Sullenberger-The final speaker for the The Colorado Speaker Series on April 20, 2024.

Concerts to Check Out

I’m amazed at all of the great music coming through town and the incredible variety of music represented. From hip hop, to country, classical and more. I do want to point out that hip hop, R&B and other varieties of African-American music were way underrepresented for YEARS because artists avoided coming here and people in the Colorado music industry were problematic. I’m so excited that so many artists are coming to town and making Colorado a destination for all artists to perform at, make money and enjoy. Which of these concerts are you looking at attending?

  • Sublime at Red Rocks (with Rome and Cypress Hill)

One of the best concerts I’ve ever attended was Cypress Hill at Red Rocks. The only problem with attending shows at Red Rocks in April is that the weather is really unpredictable.

Sports Events to Enjoy in April

Denver is a sports town. We have both national, college and regional teams that represent our region in different leagues. If you are a fan of: football, basketball, hockey, soccer, baseball, rugby or lacrosse-we have a professional team. Which means, if you’re a fan of our team’s opponents it’s likely that you can watch your team lose to one of our teams while you’re here. Unless it’s the Rockies (baseball) we’re going through it right now.

Denver Nuggets

Crossing my fingers, the Denver Nuggets will be in the playoffs as well. Keep an eye out for NBA Playoff game schedules.

Colorado Avalanche

We have an embarrassment of riches here in Denver. If you love the National Hockey League, it’s pretty likely that the Colorado Avalanche will be in the NHL Playoffs as well. Crossing my fingers.

Colorado Mammoth Lacrosse

I bet you didn’t know that the Colorado Mammoth have won the National Lacrosse League’s championship before and I’ve heard these games are FUN and CHEAP. On my list.

Colorado Rapids Soccer

I really enjoy heading over to Dick’s Sporting Goods Park to watch a game. My biggest complaint is that it’s not served by public transit and it’s so annoying. Great facility, fun times, but a little difficult to make your way to if you don’t want to drive.

Mile High 420 Festival-Civic Center

I always mention that I voted against legalizing cannabis. Not because I’m against it, but I just wasn’t convinced that we were up for the challenge being the leader in cannabis legalization would create. With great freedom creates great responsibility.

Happy to say that I’m really happy to say that Colorado has done a great job of managing the complexity of legalized weed. The Mile High 420 Festival has become a huge part of experiencing the joy of smoking up together in a fun and safe space with great music.
