Things to Do in Denver, Colorado in December 2023

Spread the love

If you’ve lived in Denver for awhile, you probably have some pretty specific food traditions that happen during the fall. One of my favorites is picking up freshly roasted Hatch or Pueblo peppers usually during late August through early October. Another favorite tradition besides enjoying a fabulous Thanksgiving meal is picking up tamales for Christmas. I did not grow up with this tradition, but I love tamales and I love supporting the small businesses that make them. I’m sharing a few other food focused traditions further down in the post. I had so much fun putting together this list of things to do in Denver, Colorado in December and I hope you have fun checking these activities out.

Some Tips About Denver During the Month of December

There are some things to watch out for if you’re planning on visiting during the Holiday Season or flying across the state making your way to a different destination.

  • There’s a lot to do in the Denver Metro area during the winter months-Cooler weather doesn’t shut anything down here. We just wear a beanie and a puffy coat and enjoy whatever it is we’re planning on doing.
  • December weather in Denver-It’s actually pretty nice during the month of December. Make sure to wear layers because there is a lot of weather variability during the month.
The Gargoyles are back at Denver International Airport.
They are located near the baggage carousels.

Make Sure to Book a Tour

Whether you live in Colorado or visiting, a tour is a great pressure free way to explore Denver and the surrounding areas. Avoid rush hour traffic, driving in the snow or having to navigate in a new location and all the stress that is a part of visiting a town that’s unfamiliar to you.

What to Bring

This is the time of year when you absolutely have to think about how changing weather and altitudes will impact what you need to pack for your trip.

Depending on where you are and what the weather is doing you’ll need to wear layers. If you plan on hiking you’ll also need to bring some gear or get some gear while you’re in town.

Puffy Jacket

Beanie

Collapsable water bottle

Lip balm

Swimsuit

  • You need a swimsuit for hot tubs or hot springs!

Lotion

Sunblock

Hat

Sunglasses

Don’t forget to bring your bathing suit! Especially if you’re spending any time in the mountains during your Denver based visit.

Ski Fun Has Begun

I personally prefer to begin snowboarding at the end of December because the snow base is much deeper around that time. I feel like the conditions are better and a bit safer. That said there are a lot of diehard winter sports enthusiasts who have been hitting the slopes since whenever the first resort has opened up its first lifts for the 2023/2024 ski season.

Denver folks spend a lot of time enjoying the mountains throughout the year and the winter months are incredibly busy in the mountains.

Culture/Theater and Comedy Events

There are a ridiculous number of events happening in Denver this December. The Yippe Ki Kay-Die Hard Parody is my number one event for me to attend because it confirms that Die Hard is a Christmas movie. Interestingly, December is painfully light on concerts coming through town. If that changes I will update this post.

I’m also looking forward to the Camp Christmas experience that I’ve wanted to attend since it began a few years ago. It’s finally the right time and I’ll keep you post on what it’s like.

Denver Foodie Experiences in December

The Holiday Season is a magical time of year for me and enjoying food traditions are an important part of how I experience this time of year. I’ve listed a few food traditions that I embrace in Denver during December.

  • Dim Sum dinner on Christmas-If you’re spending time with friends or have a small family in town, eating Dim Sum on Christmas is a great way to spend time with people. I’ve actually done this before and it’s so fun sitting with strangers in a packed restaurant eating food you didn’t have to cook.
    • Where to go: Star Kitchen
      • Make sure to call before going to make sure that they are open.
  • Tamales-Curtis Park Creamery
    • I love the tradition of getting a dozen tamales at this time of year. There’s nothing better than eating good food and supporting a local business.
      • FYI-This is not a sit-down restaurant. Curtis Park Creamery is to-go only.

Sports Events in Denver this December

Did you see those NBA Championship rings that dropped in October? Sexy. I love the Denver Nuggets so much and basketball season brings me so much happiness. Who’s going to the games? Or, have you found a watch bar that you enjoy going to? There are a TON of games during the month of December, so I’ve decided to share just a few of my favorite matchups.

Football Games in December

We’ve had an interesting football season this year. I will say that one interesting benefit to having years of painful Broncos Football is that you can actually get tickets to the games. For a really long-time it was very difficult to get tickets because they were always sold out. If you’re looking to attend a game, it’s very likely you will be able to buy a ticket fairly easily.

Sadly, college football season is done in November and the teams are gearing up for “Bowl Season”

Hockey Games in December

Wear some warm clothes and watch a Colorado Avalanche game. They are a ton of fun, the team is highly competitive and enjoyable to watch. An Avs night is always a good time.

Miscellaneous Sporting Events

Lacrosse is a fast-moving, fun and affordable sport to enjoy if you’re looking to check out a new to you event. I’ve never met someone who hasn’t enjoyed a Mammoth game and they’ve won the National League Championship too. These are very competitive games.

Gymnastics! When I was a little girl I wanted to go to the Olympics so badly. I was flipping off of bars at the park, doing cartwheels and more. DU’s Women’s gymnastics squad is fun to watch and there’s a free intrasquad event in Denver.
