Denver Colorado’s Weather During the Summer
One of the strangest things to me that frequently happens is the assumption that Denver is cold all year long. In fact, even as recently as this summer I had someone make a comment about how hot did it get in the summer? While most people didn’t have AC units in their home and relied upon fans and swamp coolers to cool off towards the end of summer, I can safely say that Denver, Colorado’s weather during the summer is hot AF but there are some things to think about if you’re planning to move or visit during the summer.

Afternoon Rain Showers
At the time I’m writing this post it’s the summer of 2023 and I keep getting caught in afternoon rain showers. In fact, this year has broken records for the amount of rain that we’ve gotten. I flew out of state a couple of times this summer and was absolutely amazed by how lush and green Colorado was for the time of year. We’ve been dealing with decades, literally decades of drought and severe wildfires so to have to remember that it might rain and that I’ll need an umbrella or rain coat just in case is so strange.
I remember visiting my grandma out of state the year before COVID. She asked if I had a rain coat and I said “No, it doesn’t rain that much in Denver.” That afternoon I returned to find a rain jacket on my bed. I have used that jacket so much this year that I laugh each time I put it on and think about that conversation.
Denver Colorado’s Weather During the Summer
Is typically very nice. It’s not humid and when Denverites complain about humidity, it’s much lower than what you would experience in a humid climate. My personal humidity pain threshold is anything over 12% humidity-I feel it immediately because Denver is typically so dry. When I was growing up my mom had to put a humidifier in my room (this isn’t unusual) because I would get bloody noses because it was so dry inside. According to different weather websites that I checked, July is the hottest month of the year. The summer heat usually lands in the anywhere from the 70’s-90’s with June being the coolest month of the summer. We don’t get a lot of 100 degree days and so far this year haven’t hit 100 degrees yet.
Escaping to the Mountains
When it gets really hot many of us will escape to the mountains. In fact, I just got back from spending a week in Breckenridge and it was wonderful. Daily temperatures were in the lower 80’s and the night time temperatures were perfect. On the days when there was afternoon rain things cooled off enough for me to enjoy a soak in the hot tub at the place that I was staying in Breckenridge.
In fact, it was so nice in Breckenridge that after I returned to Denver I seriously thought about returning to the mountains the same week. Instead, I planned to take advantage of the Zero Fare for Better Air Campaign and go to Estes Park for the day. Bustang has discounted fares for the months of August and September. I love visiting Estes Park and not having to drive up there and having the chance to enjoy Rocky Mountain National Park is a flex.
Denver’s Weather in August
We’ve definitely noticed that it has gotten hotter towards the end of the summer. Many school districts in the region have changed their starting dates because the buildings have gotten too hot for the kids. Many Colorado schools don’t have AC units (typically there are swamp coolers or fans) so the kids were miserable the first couple of weeks of school due to the heat. It’s really expensive to add AC for a few weeks of sustained heat when things begin to cool off in September.
If you’re wondering about Denver, Colorado’s weather during the summer don’t be-it’s hot.
