What is Denver Like in August?

It often feels like people are rushing to get as many fun activities in as possible before school begins in mid-August. Yes, most of the kids here begin school in early to mid-August (I did). With that being said there are a number of fun things to do in August in Denver that are non-negotiable.

What is the Weather Like in Denver in August?

One of the questions that I have gotten more times than I can count is “Is it hot in Colorado during the summer?” The first couple of times I’ve been asked this question I’ve been caught off-guard by the assumption by many that the weather in Denver is cold all year long. In fact, it’s hot AF in Denver in August.

Think in the high 80’s-100 degrees.

We also often have late afternoon thunderstorms as well. It’s important to mention though that by mid to late August, we may begin hearing light snow reports occurring at the highest mountain peaks in the Rocky Mountains. I love it when these snow reports happen. No, it doesn’t snow in Denver in August when these mountain snow reports occur.

Book a Tour

As the summer travel season winds down, things get crazy busy. The highways are packed with visitors from all over the world. Patios are packed and it’s just a fun time to enjoy Denver. I do recommend booking a tour as a way to experience Denver and let someone else take control of the planning. Below are a couple of my favorite tours offered currently.

Where to Stay

During the summer there are so many fantastic hotels to stay at while you’re in town. I’ve included a list of my favorites. Most of these properties will have at least one of the following:

  • Access to transit

  • A rooftop or street level patio

  • Swimming pool, fitness center or both

  • A great happy hour or close to one (mocktails too!)

  • Restaurant or access to a good one close by

My Recommendations

There are so many hotels out there to choose from. Here are a few that I would check out first.

Get that Travel Insurance

Vacations to Denver and the state of Colorado are often filled with activity. You may find yourself hiking, biking, camping or on a scooter exploring town. With that in mind, I strongly recommend reviewing your health insurance and picking up an additional travel insurance policy. Just in case. There’s also the potential for wild weather conditions and other external factors that have the potential to impact your trip. Stay prepared.

What to Do

There are so many things to do during a visit to Denver that I’m often baffled when people tell me that they just hung out on the 16th Street Mall. I think that can happen because people are unfamiliar with Denver and are used to heading directly to the downtown of any city that they find themselves in. I often say that you Experience Denver and Visit Philly” with that in mind, here are my picks of things to do in Denver in August 2024.

Sports

Denver is a sports city. If you love attended games played by teams that competitive in their leagues, Denver is a great town to visit to watch your favorite teams be beaten by our teams LOL! August is one of the quieter times of year for enjoying professional sports but there are some notable leagues that are in pre-season at that time.

  • Denver Broncos Training Camp
    • I have no idea who our quarterback is and I’m still salty about how they treated Russell Wilson, but onward. Let’s see what this season will bring.

  • College Football Pre-Season
    • Let’s see what Coach Prime can make happen this season. Will CU end up in one of the “Bowls”?

  • BMW Championship (Golf) 8/20-8/25
    • If you’re into golf-you should check this event out.

Miscellaneous Events

  • Car Free First Friday on August 2, 204
    • This is the only First Friday that I prioritize during the summer months and my absolute favorite one. I’m a huge fan of car free events and spaces.

Concerts

Austin, Nashville and New Orleans are frequently brought up as “the” best music cities in the United States. Denver, very seriously, should be added to that list. The sheer amount of live music that we can enjoy at any given time is wild. You might not hear music in the streets all the time-that’s because we’re a colder weather climate so there’s a good chunk of the year where music fans are enjoying music indoors. That said here’s my (incomplete) list of concerts that I’m excited about that are coming to town in August. I’m shoving cash into a savings account as we speak.

  • Reggae on the Rocks
    • 8/24/2024

  • Bikini Kill
    • 8/27/2024

Comedy and Theater

August tends to be one of the quieter months for enjoying comedy and theater. It’s basically a downtime for those types of events.

  • Michael Che and Colin Joast-They are in town for a fundraiser and are the entertainment for that fundraising event.
    • Bellco Theater-8/24

Festivals

One thing that I love about August is all of the cultural festivals hosted by different communities in town. I like to bring at least $50 bucks to each one of these events so that I can eat my way through them.

  • Ethiopian Day Festival

  • La Plaza Park Day

Miscellaneous Fun

Mountain Fun

One of the things that might surprise a lot of people is that the mountain wildflower season happens late in the summer. One of the best places for experiencing it is in Crested Butte. It’s one of the most beautiful towns in the state and worth the trip to get there. Check CDOT for roadwork details before you make your way down there.

Make sure to carry a water bottle, slather a whole bunch of sunblock on your face and wear some comfortable shoes as you enjoy the many spaces and experiences happening in August. Denver is so much fun during the month of August but there is definitely a mix of chill and frantic energy all at the same time. We know that winter is coming.
