Staying at The Slate Hotel in Denver: What To Expect
Initially, I wasn’t sure what to think about The Slate Hotel. It felt like it was in a slightly awkward location. Then, I started meeting out-of-state vacationers who were staying there. They absolutely LOVED The Slate Hotel and the more people that I met who stayed there, the more I understood why this understated (and fairly new) hotel is one of the best hotels in downtown Denver to stay at. If you’re planning a vacation or attending a conference in Denver, The Slate Hotel is a great home base for travelers looking for a place to stay that is in a quieter, accessible part of downtown Denver.

Where is The Slate Hotel
The Slate Hotel is located next to the Colorado Convention Center on the eastern side of the building. What I like about this hotel’s location is that it’s in a quiet area of downtown but accessible to points of interest via foot, the free mall ride or car share.
What is The Slate Hotel Close To?
If you’re staying at The Slate Hotel, ask about how to take the Free Mall Shuttle to other points in downtown Denver.
Some of those spots include:
- 16th Street Mall*
- Denver Pavilions
- The Denver Mint
- Paramount Theater
- Civic Center Park
- The Capital Building
- Denver Art Museum
- Kirkland Museum
There are other points of interest in the area but I thought this list was a great one to help you get started exploring downtown.
16th Street Mall-What You Need to Know
At the time that I’m working on this post, Denver’s historic 16th Street Mall is undergoing a historic renovation project. Like many infrastructure projects, it’s taking a bit longer than they originally planned. And it is having a ripple affect on downtown. Because of location of The Slate Hotel (at the eastern end of downtown) the blocks being worked on for that project will be the last ones completed mid-2025.
Yes. Just note that most points of interest on the Mall will likely be on the western end of the mall past the Clocktower. West is heading towards the mountains.
Should You Explore the 16th Street Mall?
Yes. It’s within walking distance of The Slate Hotel. As long as you keep in mind that the eastern half of the mall (in proximity to The Slate) is at the tail end of a large reconstruction project and may impact some of how you experience that part of the Mall. To make things a little easier, I’ve shared some events and spaces you should bookmark to explore while you’re in town.
Fun spots to check out:
- Denver Center for Performing Arts
- Larimer Square
- Ball Arena-Denver Nuggets, Colorado Avalanche and concerts are hosted there
- Empower Field/Mile High Stadium-Denver Broncos, concerts and other events are hosted there
- Union Station
- McGregor Square
- Coors Field
- Dairy Block/Milk Market/Free Market
- Five Points/RINO
- Avanti F&B
- Happy Camper (pizza)
- LoHi-Lower Highlands

Staying at The Slate Hotel
I’ve only heard fantastic things from guests who’ve stayed at this hotel. I’m looking forward to testing out the Teacher’s Lounge Restaurant soon. If you’re coming to Denver to attend a conference at the Colorado Convention Center, watch your favorite team compete against one of our professional teams or are looking to watch a favorite musical-The Slate Hotel is a great base while you’re in town.
One thing that I would do is book a Resort Pass at an adjacent hotel that has a rooftop pool or hot tub so that you can enjoy that amenity.
